Bears Pitch 10th Shutout, Hold Off UIC on Senior Day
October 16, 2022 | Women's Soccer
SPRINGFIELD – The combination of a late Hailey Chambliss goal and a Camielle Day shutout struck again at Allison South Stadium, with Missouri State women's soccer holding off UIC (3-6-5) here Sunday afternoon, 1-0.
The match served as Senior Day for MSU (10-5-2). Eight Bears were honored during the pregame ceremony, as Maddie Augustine, Emma Hensley, Bella Bryson, Isabel Burke, Ingrid Perkins, Jade Loftness, Hannah Peterson and Kyli Jackson all suited up for the last time in a regular season home game.
"They were the ones that shaped our core values," head coach Kirk Nelson said.
From the moment the Senior Day festivities were finished, UIC seemed poised to play spoiler, outshooting the Bears 6-2 in the first half and 15-8 in total. This was the first time MoState was outshot in a match since Sept. 8 at Arkansas State, and in a game that featured two out of the top four Missouri Valley Conference teams, goals proved to be at a premium.
"UIC came out pressing like crazy and put us under a tremendous amount of pressure," Nelson said. "It was difficult to find our rhythm."
"During the last 10 minutes of the first half, we were able to gain some momentum," Nelson added. "We actually changed our formation, and in the second half, I think we took control."
Despite the Flames' offensive efforts, MSU stood on its head defensively. Day had a season-high eight saves on the afternoon, while defensive anchors Carly Raunig, Jenna Anderson and Jackson played the full 90 minutes.
The match looked like it could be headed to a draw as the clock showed only 10 minutes left. However, in the 84th minute, Chambliss continued her hot streak and found the back of the net for the Bears, scoring off a crossbar deflection by Iraia Arrue. The goal was the freshman's fifth of the season, with all scores coming within the last six matches. The Bears only needed the one breakthrough and held on to the lead the rest of the way, securing the one-goal shutout against the Flames.
Missouri State concludes the regular season in Normal, Ill. on Sunday, Oct. 23, facing Illinois State at 12 p.m.
