Redbird’s Golden Goal Sinks Bears
September 29, 2021 | Women's Soccer
SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's soccer team was defeated by Illinois State, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Allison South Stadium. Natalie Vaughn-Low made the Redbirds walk-off winners 19 seconds into overtime when teammate Haley Glover picked off an MSU pass before setting her up on a breakaway. Vaughn-Low then sent a right footed shot past Montgomery and into the net to give Illinois State their second MVC win of the season.
"It was a little disappointing in the way that we lost today's match," head coach Rob Brewer stated. "Going forward we have to score more goals and we were not very good in our attack. Illinois State defended very well; they were high energy. I felt like we defended fine, we had a couple opportunities we did not capitalize on."
It marked Missouri State's first home loss of the season. The Bears (4-4-3, 1-1 MVC) also played to an overtime decision for the fourth time.
Offensive opportunities were limited in the first half as MSU goalkeeper Katherine Montgomery corralled the only shot on goal – a strike from Vaughn-Low in the 15th minute. Kennady Orlick and Grace O'Keefe both tallied shots in the first half for Missouri State with O'Keefe's being on goal. The Bears entered the locker room in a scoreless tie for the fourth time this season.
Sierra Fury made an impressive save off an Illinois State set piece in the 46th minute of play to deny the Redbird's of a goal.
Anna Durnin put a shot on goal for the Bears in the 55th minute, sending a header toward the net but Illinois State keeper Gillian Priya was able to make the save.
Overall, Illinois State held the upper hand in shots (15-7) and shots on goal (6-2), while corner kicks were knotted up at five apiece.
Montgomery finished her day with five saves and one goal allowed.
The Bears close out their two-match homestand against Valparaiso on Sunday, Oct. 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the match will be broadcast on ESPN+. Admission is free to all matches at Allison South Stadium this season.
