Cross Country Set for MVC Championship
March 02, 2021 | Women's Cross Country
SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State cross country team concludes its 2020-21 modified season with the Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championship on Wednesday, March 3. The 5k championship race will commence at 12:00 p.m. from the Angel Mounds Cross Country Course in Evansville, Ind.
Â
Following continued conversations with MVC cross country head coaches and applying guidelines outlined by local health care experts and officials, the league has affirmed that no spectators will be permitted at the 2021 MVC Cross Country Championship.
Wednesday's meet will be the first competition for the Bears since the fall. In October, MSU competed at the Cowboy Jamboree (Oct. 3, 2020) and the Little Rock Open (Oct. 17, 2020) for a shortened fall portion of the schedule.
"Expectations are certainly different than past championships," said head coach Jordan Fife. "There are two things I know for sure though: our student-athletes are excited for this opportunity and we are going to make the most of it."
MSU's distance group features savvy veterans Grace Breiten, Edna Dar and Adyson Delaney who were the top-3 finishers for the Bears in both fall races. All-conference returner, Breiten has finished in the top-20 in three straight MVC championships after an 18th place in 2019, a fifth place in 2018 and a 13th place in 2017. At last year's Valley meet, Dar placed 24th while Delaney finished 38th.
Junior Shelby Palmer and newcomer Sierra Williams each scored points for MSU in the fall as well. Palmer rounded out the MSU scoring at the MVC Cross Country Championship last season where she finished 41st.
"We've prepared as best we can for this dual season," added Fife. "Tomorrow they get a chance to line up with their teammates and compete for a conference championship which is something very special that they will remember for the rest of their lives."
