Beach Bears Show Resiliency with Pair of Wins
March 12, 2021 | Beach Volleyball
MONROE, La.– The Missouri State beach volleyball team rebounded from yesterday's loss with a pair of dual wins over Houston Baptist and New Orleans by the scores of 3-2 and 4-1, respectively.
"I am really proud of the resiliency of this group," head coach Russ Friedland said. "To come into day two and win twice against two well-coached teams is huge for this program. This group competes hard and wants to win. We are excited to be bringing back two wins from this trip."Â Â
The Bears (4-1) got their day started with an exciting 3-2 win over Houston Baptist (1-8). Tylar Garrett and Chloe Filipski picked up their first win of the season in the No. 1 spot defeating HBU's Kylie Bryan and Lindsay Harris 21-19 and 21-15. In the No. 2 match, Grace Cook and Chloe Tome improved to 3-0 on the season with a three-set win over the Huskies' Maddie Butters and Brennan Miller (21-12, 15-21, 15-7). In the decisive No. 3 match, Kylee Davis and Parker McAllen gave MSU the victory as they defeated Mary Alper and Natalie Bennett of HBU in a three-set thriller by the scores of 23-21, 23-25 and 15-9. Â
The Bears dispatched New Orleans (2-3) in their second dual of the day, 4-1. Missouri State got off to a 1-0 lead early courtesy of New Orleans forfeiting the No. 5 match. Cook and Tome continued their winning ways sweeping UNO's Alexis Carr and Maxine Hayes, 21-18 and 21-11 in the No. 2 spot. Davis and McAllen once again gave MSU the clinching point with a win in the No. 3 match, 21-15, 21-15. In the No. 4 spot, Pamela Jaime and Tory Penick gave the Bears some insurance with a three-set win over the Privateers' Madeline Drake and Liz Gialanella, 19-21, 21-11, 15-7.  Â
"Getting two wins is a great way to start spring break," Friedland added. "We are excited to get back to train prior to hosting the Bear Challenge at the end of the month."Â Â
The Bears' 4-1 start is the best in program history.Â
MSU returns home to host the Bear Challenge, March 25-26 at the Allison Sand Volleyball Courts. Joining the Bears in the tournament field will be Central Arkansas, Ottawa and Louisiana Monroe. Â
