MIAMI, Fla. – The Missouri State men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition with top-five finishes at the TYR Fall Classic hosted by Florida International. The men accumulated 289 points to finish fourth behind Florida State (517.5), TCU (321) and Pittsburgh (312). While the women's squad finished fifth with a total of 247 points.
"I was very pleased with how our group performed this weekend," head coach
Dave Collins said. "We saw a lot of improvement from last weekend and raced much tougher. This was a unique and fun format that put us in front of some teams we don't normally get to compete against."
Missouri State got the meet started in the women's 400 medley relay as the squad of
Kelly Sego,
Yuliya Zubina, Sami Roemer and
Anna Miller clocked a 3:51.05 to finish fifth.
"I'm really happy with how this meet went for us as a team," Miller reflected. "It's super fun to come to a completely different environment and race people we have never raced before. I'm proud of how we stepped up and competed, and especially of how much fun we had while doing it."
Robbie Hill,
Michael Hampel,
Pawel Krawczyk and
Bruno Miranda Guerra finished third in the men's 400 medley relay with a time of 3:21.30, the 10
th-fastest in program history.
Libby Howell paced MSU in the women's 200 freestyle by swimming in 1:52.16 to finish fourth in the A heat while
Anna Lucas (1:54.75) took sixth in the B heat.
On the men's side,
Arthur Cury (1:40.16) finished third in the A heat while newcomer Brunno Suzuki (1:41.12) took second in the B heat.
In the women's 400 IM the Bears took sixth in both heats as
Payton Smith swam a 4:37.18 in the A heat and Sego clocked a 4:39.60 in the B heat.
Dylan Moffatt paced MSU in the A heat of the men's 400 IM by placing 3rd with a time of 4:04.33. AJ Huskey swam a 4:07.43 to take 3rd in the B heat.
Sami Roemer led Missouri State in the women's 100 butterfly by clocking a 57.24 to take third in the A heat while
Ulyana Zubina (57.88) recorded a fifth-place finish in the B heat.
Krawczyk finished fourth in the A heat of men's 200 freestyle with a time of 50.75 while Robbie Hill swam a 51.65 to take fifth in the B heat.
Miller was victorious in the women's 50 freestyle with a blistering time of 23.34. Lucas swam a 25.00 in the B heat to come in sixth.
"To win the 50 free at a meet like this is pretty special," Collins stated. "Anna continues to see the benefits of some really good training."
In men's action, Bruno Guerra (21.36) placed sixth in the A heat and Cury (21.55) finished fifth in the B heat.
In the women's 100 breaststroke
Yuliya Zubina (1:08.21) placed seventh in the A heat while
Alessia Puleo swam a 1:06.04 to finish fourth in the B heat.
Hampel paced Missouri State in the A heat of the men's 100 breaststroke with a fourth-place finish by clocking 56.79 while Nick Schuster (57.20) finished third.
Sego (1:00.43) took eighth in the A heat of the 100 backstroke while Roemer clocked a 58.95 to finish fifth in the B heat.
Robbie Hill had an impressive performance in the men's 100 backstroke by finishing the A heat in second with a time of 50.45. AJ Huskey (53.16) placed fifth in the B heat.
Both the men and women placed fifth in the 200 freestyle relay. Miller, Howell,
Ulyana Zubina and Lucas clocked a 1:35.98 while Suzuki, Hampel Guerra and Cury had a time of 1:24.72.
In the women's 200 medley relay the Bears took fifth courtesy of Sego,
Yuliya Zubina, Roemer and Miller swimming a 1:45.30.
Hill, Hampel, Suzuki and Guerra clocked a 1:31.97 to place fourth in the men's 200 medley relay.
In women's 500 action, freestyle Howell (5:11.90) finished fifth in the A heat while Smith (5:08.99) placed fourth.
Krawczyk swam a 4:31.40 to record a runner-up finish in the A heat of the men's 500 freestyle. Moffatt won the B heat of the event while posting a time of 4:32.61.
"Overall, I thought the meet went great for the team," said Moffatt. "We had some great swims and we also learned what we need to work on moving forward. It was a great experience being able to come down to the Florida and swim against some tough competition."
Puleo (2:20.52) recorded a third-place finish in the A heat of the women's 200 breaststroke while
Yuliya Zubina (2:28.48) finished fifth B heat action.
Hampel (2:06.06) paced the Bears on the men's side with a fifth-place finish in the A heat while Schuster (2:06.99) took third in the B heat.
In the women's 200 backstroke MSU occupied both sixth-place spots with Sego (2:08.21) in the A heat and Howell (2:08.67) in the B heat.
In the men's A heat Robbie Hill (1:51.81) placed fourth and in the B heat Moffatt (1:55.29) finished fifth.
Miller swam a 51.12 to finish second in the A heat of the women's 100 freestyle while Lucas (53.97) took fifth in the B heat.
Guerra (46.56) took fourth in A heat of the men's 100 freestyle while Cury (46.04) finished third in the B heat.
Smith (2:05.26) led Missouri State again in the women's 200 butterfly with a fifth-place finish in the A heat while
Ulyana Zubina (2:14.98) placed seventh in the B heat.
The men recorded top-three finishes in both heats of the 200 butterfly with Krawczyk taking third (1:50.51) in the A heat and Huskey (1:52.40) posting a second-place finish in the B heat.
In women's 200 IM action Roemer (2:08.41) took sixth in the A heat while Sego (2:12.47) placed fifth in the B heat.
Cury paced the men in the 200 IM (1:53.49) with a sixth-place finish in the A heat while Suzuki (1:54.38) finished sixth in the B heat.
In diving action, Adrianna Avila led MSU on both boards while posting scores of, 223.90 on the 3-meter boards and 225.80 on the 1-meter boards.
Hailey Rissinger posted marks of 183.80 in 3-meter diving and 204.75 in 1-meter diving.
John David Spence had marks of 268.90 in 3-meter diving and 258.90 in 1-meter competition.
Trevor Fischer posted scores of 230.60 on the 3-meter and 238.40 on the 1-meter boards.
Missouri State closed out the event with fourth-place finishes in the women's and men's 400 freestyle relay. Lucas, Miller, Roemer and Howell posted a 3:33.38 while Robbie Hill, Suzuki, Guerra and Cury finished in 3:05.37.
Both teams will be back in action Oct. 22-23 in Lawrence, Kan. The men will face South Dakota while the women will square off against Kansas. Start times for the event will be at 5 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.
