MSU has Strong Swim Performances in Dallas

January 30, 2021

DALLAS – Four individual wins and one relay victory highlighted the Missouri State men's swimming and diving team's efforts in Saturday's dual against SMU, at the Robinson and Lindley Aquatics Center, Saturday.

Freshman
Dylan Moffatt had an outstanding performance as the Independence, Iowa native took first in both the 1000 and 500-yard freestyles. In the 1000 free Moffatt dominated the field swimming a personal best of 9:08.53 to win the event by 18 seconds. Moffatt's time of 4:26.48 in the 500 free was also a collegiate best.

"This season is different with the limited opportunities and we have to take advantage of each one we get," said Moffatt. "I started the meet with a great 1000, then built up from there with the energy from our team."

Freshman
Robbie Hill also claimed a victory in the 100 backstroke after swimming a 48.86. Hill was six one-hundredths of a second off his personal best mark which he set back on Nov. 7, at Mizzou.

"I thought the guys' performances excelled for where we are in the season," Robbie Hill said. Coming off our meet last week the guys got up, executed, and surpassed those swims with an even harder work week. We keep getting better every time we race and are at a perfect spot to be dangerous by the end of the season."

Hill also garnered two second-place finishes in the 200 backstroke (1:49.00) and the 200 IM (1:50.81).

Tyler Lewis claimed the fourth individual win in the 200 fly, clocking in with a personal best mark of 1:50.25. In addition to winning the 200 fly, Lewis also claimed second in the 400 IM (4:03.9).

MSU scored a win in the 400 free relay when Moffatt,
Michael HampelNick Andres and James Vaughn combined to swim a 3:05.43.

Hampel took third in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.00) while Andres took third in the 500 free (4:39.25).

"We saw some really good stuff all around today," Hampel acknowledged. "The younger guys really stepped up for us. I loved the way we battled from start to finish. We knew it was going to be a dogfight and we embraced a scrappy attitude. I love the direction we are heading."

In diving action,
John David Spence and Michael Claunch and each recorded a pair of top-three finishes. Claunch took second on the 1-meter boards (285.53) and third on the 3-meter boards (283.80). While, Spence took second on the 3-meter boards (305.03) and third on the 1-meter boards (262.20)

"I am proud of the way everyone competed today, especially against a ranked team," Claunch admitted. "Everyone came out and got after it. We really showed what we could do."

Overall, No. 25 SMU took home the victory as they edged MSU 182-118.

The women's swimming and diving team will be back in action on Feb. 13, when they host Little Rock. Start time is set for 10 a.m. at Hammons Student Center. The men will be back in action Feb. 27-28 when they participate in the Mizzou Last Chance meet.
