October 02, 2020 | Women's Golf
MAUMELLE, Ark. -- The Missouri State women's golf team opened its 2020-21 season with a rare dual meet with Central Arkansas at Maumelle (Ark.) Country Club on Thursday (Oct. 1). The two teams competed in 18-hole stroke play in the morning round and then a match play format in the afternoon, coming away with entirely different results.
UCA dominated the stroke play, 297-314, but MSU rebounded in a big way in the afternoon, capturing a 3.5 to 1.5 victory in match play. UCA's Elin Cumlin was medalist in the morning, firing a three-under 69, while Faith Belmear led the MSU with 75. Abby Cavaiani carded 77 for the Bears, followed by Allison Bray with 80, Brooke Newell with 82 and Kayla Pfitzner with 83.
Match play, an entirely different format, saw the team's two best performers from the morning round, Belmear and Kumlin, battle to a draw in the first match for a half point for each team. Bray downed UCA's Camila Moreno 3 & 2, Pfitzner posted a 4 & 2 win over Hayley Jones and, in a thrilling match which was the last one on the course, Newell defeated Pim-orn Thitisup on the last hole, 1-up. UCA's lone win came from Tania Nunez, 4 & 3 over the Bears' Abby Cavaiani.
The Bears are idle this weekend and return to action Oct. 12-13 at the Lady RedWolves Classic in Jonesboro, Ark.
