August 30, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State opened its 2019 volleyball season with a 3-1 victory against visiting Jacksonville Friday evening on the first night of the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational at Hammons Student Center.
Behind 25 kills from sophomore Amelia Flynn – the fourth time in 33 career matches she has posted at least that many kills – the Bears triumphed by set scores of 26-24, 22-25, 25-16, 25-20.
Flynn piled up eight kills in the first set, but the Bears fell behind 11-6 and played catch-up until Leah Vokolek served one of MSU's nine aces for a 21-all score. Missouri State took its first lead since 5-4 at 25-24, and completed the win thanks to a JU attack error.
Missouri State led only once in the second set, 22-21, and the Dolphins (0-2) closed on a 4-0 run after the Bears committed 13 total errors and hit .033 in the period.
Laynie Dake, who served a career-high four aces, was at the service line for a pair of big runs in the third set, including a 6-0 spurt to hand MSU a 24-16 lead in the comfortable win. Then in the fourth, Missouri State rallied from a 14-12 deficit, thanks in large part to a defensive effort that held JU to five total kills.
The match featured 35 total service errors – 18 for JU and 17 for the Bears – while Missouri State hit .197 compared to .120 for the visitors. Gerri Idos led MSU with 13 digs, and Chloe Rear had seven kills, 16 assists and eight digs.
Flynn finished with 11 digs for her 13th career double-double, Vokolek added 11 digs, and freshman Azyah Green participated in all four of Missouri State's blocks.
MSU plays two matches Saturday, facing DePaul (2-0) at 1 p.m. and Southeast Missouri State (0-1) at 7 p.m.
