SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. -- Senior Kory Franks finished second and Missouri State took third in the team race at the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship at The Club at Porto Cima on Tuesday (Apr. 23). The Bears were third after each of the tournament's three rounds, posting 299-292-293--884, trailing only champion Southern Illinois and runner-up Illinois State and putting an end to their season.

Franks rallied from three strokes down on the back nine to force a sudden-death playoff for medalist honors, which he dropped on the first extra hole. Franks made a bogey after an errant tee shot forced him to play out of a penalty area. But after missing the green to the right on his second shot, Illinois State's David Rauer made a near-miraculous up-and-down to save par and claim the individual title. Both players finished regulation with four-under-par 212 totals for 54 holes; Franks shot 72-70-70, while Rauer had 66-75-71.

Fellow MSU senior Brad Carpenter took fourth place and also earned all-conference honors, carding 73-70-71--214. He also earned the Valley's prestigious Elite 17 Award for the second time in three years, an honor that goes to the top-18 finisher with the highest grade-point average, which for Carpenter is 3.86.

Seniors Adam Fisher and Jack Knoesel wound up their collegiate careers with a tie for 29th after compiling 233 totals; Fisher shot 80-77-76 and Knoesel 74-83-76. Junior Lukas McCalla carded 81-75-82--238 and tied for 38th.

SIU came from behind to win the team title, posting a final-round 281 to overtake ISU and win by 10 strokes, 859 to 869. Then came the Bears, followed by Bradley (894), Valparaiso (902), UNI (918), Drake (921), Loyola (922) and Evansville (937).
