SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. -- The Missouri State men's golf team is third after the first day at the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Championship at the Club at Porto Cima near the Lake of the Ozarks. The Bears were third after Monday's (Apr. 22) morning round with a 299 and remained there at day's end with a 292 in the afternoon. Their 591 total has them on the edge of contention, trailing pre-tournament favorite Illinois State by 14 and second-place Southern Illinois by 13.
ISU leads the nine-team field with a 577 total, one better than SIU. Then comes MSU, followed by Bradley (603), Valparaiso (605), Loyola (607), Drake (615), UNI (617) and Evansville (625).
Seniors
Kory Franks and
Brad Carpenter paced the Bears and are in the thick of the medalist race as they stand second and fourth, respectively, with 18 holes remaining. Franks fired 72-70--142, two under par on the par 72, 7060-yard layout, and is just a shot off the pace set by Illinois State's David Rauer, who had 66-75--141. Carpenter is just a stroke behind his teammates, two off the lead, after carding 73-70--143.
Next for the Bears is junior
Lukas McCalla, who's tied for 29th after shooting 81-75--156, followed by seniors
Adam Fisher and
Jack Knoesel tied for 32nd with 157 totals. Fisher shot 80-77 and Knoesel 74-83.
Tuesday's final round is scheduled to begin with 8 a.m. tee times off both nines. The Bears will tee off from 8:50 to 9:30 a.m. off no. 1
