Tennis Bears Bounce Back to Down Crusaders in MVC Finale

GRIFFITH, Ind. – The Missouri State women's tennis team beat Valparaiso, 5-2, in its Missouri Valley Conference finale to snap a three-game skid and end the regular season on a high note at the Match Point Club Saturday afternoon.

Five of the six singles matches favored the Bears (10-10, 3-2 MVC), sealing their third league victory of the season.

Ellie Burger set the offense in motion, picking up MSU's first point in a straight-set 6-0, 6-1 decision in the sixth flight. The Chesterfield, Mo. native ends MVC singles play with a spotless 5-0 record.

Senior Fati Khamissi boost the Bears to a 2-1 edge with her own 6-3, 6-1 rout in the No. 3 spot. Valparaiso (3-17, 0-5 MVC) promptly evened the series in the first flight for the second and final time before the Bears swept the remaining matches.

No. 5 Clara Gandara Gonzalez tacked on another point in a 6-2, 7-5 win before Phoebe Boeschen broke the tiebreaker in the fourth flight to clinch the contest 7-5, 7(7)-6(5).

Anna Alons was the lone Bear to advance three sets, rebounding after a second-set setback to claim the 7(8)-6(6), 3-6, 6-2 win.

No. 1 pair Alye Darter and Ellie Burger were the lone Bears to break through in doubles, blanking the Crusaders 6-0. Valparaiso took the point after taking the following two matches.

Up next, MSU readies for the MVC Women's Tennis Championship in Cedar Falls, Iowa from April 26 – 28. The Bears currently sit in the No. 4 spot in the standings and, if it holds, would play the No. 5 at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 26.
