HAMMOND, La. – A pair of early runs by Texas-San Antonio held up here Sunday morning, despite a 10-hit effort by Missouri State, in a 2-1 Roadrunners victory in the finale of the Southeastern Louisiana Lion Classic II.
Â
The Bears (6-4) stranded runners in every inning and out-hit UTSA by a 10-5 margin.
Â
UTSA (4-6) scored an unearned run in the first when Kindell Brooks reached on a bases-loaded error and then made it a 2-0 game in the second on a two-out single up the middle by Celeste Loughman.
Â
After holding UTSA in check from there, MSU starter
Steffany Dickerson (3-2) was lifted in the fifth inning with two runners on.
Madison Hunsaker came in to pitch the final 2.2 innings in relief and allowed just one hit in that span with a pair of strikeouts.
Â
Hunsaker also stood out for the Bears at the plate, going 3-for-4, including a leadoff hit in the fourth to jump start MSU's only scoring rally.
Â
Rachel Weber followed Hunsaker's infield hit with a one-out single, before
Morgan Greenlee loaded the bases. Freshman
Alex Boze then smashed a single up the middle to put the Bears on the board as part of a four-hit inning for the Bears.
Â
UTSA worked to add to its 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh, but the Bears erased the threat by gunning down pinch runner Abigail Haston at the plate on a great play by
Kyana Mason,
Daphne Plummer and Boze.
Â
Missouri State put the potential tying run on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but could not break through. Hunsaker came up with Mason on second and two outs in the bottom of the seventh but grounded out to second base to end the game for her only out of the day.
Â
Hunsaker batted .588 (10-for-17) and smacked four doubles for the tournament to lead all MSU players. As a team, the Bears batted .357 for the five-game event, outscoring their foes 17-11 in the span of a 3-2 performance.
Â
Coach
Holly Hesse's team will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., next weekend for the Easton 'Bama Bash for five games Feb. 22-24. The Bears will take on Alabama and Louisiana-Monroe twice and will also play Minnesota at the event.
