LAWRENCE, Kan.  – The Missouri State men's and women's swimming and diving team concluded Friday's opening day of the Kansas Double Dual with numerous first-place individual and team wins through 20 events at Robinson Natatorium.

MSU saw dominating performances from both squads, with seven different individuals claiming the top spot in at least one event. Michael Hampel paced the Bears, earning victories in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM.

Newcomer Samantha Hietpas made a statement in the opening long-distance individual event, beating out Kansas by nearly three seconds for the 10:17.21 win in the 1000 freestyle. On the men's side, Antonio Thomas, Pawel Krawczyk, and Sebastian Odent posted a 1-2-3 finish to put MSU ahead on the leaderboard.

Arthur Cury and Anna Miller turned in first-place efforts in the freestyle portion of the double dual, clinching the 200 and 50 events, respectively.

The Bears produced another 1-2-3 finish in the 100 backstroke, this time headlined by Noah Witzki, Thomas Heye, and Conner Ripp. The win signaled Witzki's first individual title as a Bear.

Through the heart of the first-day event schedule, MSU had several top-three decisions including Sarah Allegri's third-place finish in the 100 backstroke and Samuel Senn's 50 freestyle runner-up effort.

Diving earned the Bears key points in the closing events as Michael Claunch won the 3-meter competition while John David Spence rounded out the top three. Ashley Yarbrough and Dayana Popa impressed on the 1-meter, each placing in the top-five.

MSU recorded a top-three spot in all four relay events, with the men coming away with the victory in the 200 medley and 800 freestyle.

The Bears resume the second portion of the Kansas Double Dual Saturday at noon.
