Volleyball Bears Open Road Trip with Loss to Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Missouri State began its seven-match road trip Tuesday evening with a 3-0 loss to Kansas State, falling by set scores of 25-18, 26-24, 25-8 to the Wildcats inside Ahearn Field House.
MSU freshman Amelia Flynn had a season-high 15 kills on .357 hitting, and Emily Butters reached double figures in digs (14) for the 102nd time in her career to break a tie with Cara Hackmann for the most in school history.
The Bears (3-4) had a set point opportunity in the second to even the match, but the Wildcats (5-1) closed on a 3-0 run to steal the momentum and take the wind out of MSU's sails, paving the way to handing Missouri State its first 3-0 loss in the regular season since Sept. 17, 2016, a span of 56 matches.
The first set was tied six times to 7-7 before Kansas State began to slowly pull away, first to 13-9 on a service ace and then to 16-11 with a 3-0 run. The Bears closed the gap to 20-18 on Chloe Rear's kill, but the Wildcats answered with a 5-0 run for the win.
There were seven ties and three lead changes to a 12-all deadlock in the second before the Bears recorded back-to-back blocks for a 14-12 advantage. Missouri State led 23-21 on Flynn's eighth kill of the set, and owned a set point at 24-23 after an Ashley Ophoven kill. KSU again had a closing run in its arsenal, scoring the last three points for the two-point win.
The Wildcats opened the third set on a 6-0 run and never looked back, hitting .364 with four blocks and three more aces to run their match total to nine.
Missouri State hit .111 in the match with 19 of its 33 kills coming from freshmen. KSU finished with 10 blocks and a .284 attack efficiency.
The Bears head to College Station, Texas, for the Texas A&M Invitational on Thursday and Friday. MSU opens at 4:30 p.m. Thursday with Nicholls State.
