Volleyball Loses at Loyola in Rare Road Setback

CHICAGO -- Missouri State dropped its first Missouri Valley Conference road match in nearly three years Monday evening, falling to Loyola by set scores of 25-22, 25-17, 25-20 at Gentile Arena.

The Bears (7-9, 0-3) lost on the Valley road for the first time since Oct. 24, 2015, ending a streak of 20 consecutive wins, while the Ramblers hit .262 and recorded 10 blocks to improve to 11-4 overall and 3-0 in league play.

Laynie Dake led MSU with 10 kills, matching her career best for the second straight contest, and MacKenzie Irwin added a career-high eight kills of her own. Aubrey Cheffey had seven kills and five blocks, Emily Butters lifted 14 digs, and Chloe Rear handed out 32 assists.

The first set was all runs to a 12-all tie, including a 4-0 start for the Ramblers and spurts of 6-0 and 6-1 for the Bears. The score was tied at each point to 17-17 before Loyola scored three straight for a 20-17 advantage. MSU tied it again at 20-20 with a block from Dake and Cheffey, but the Bears never regained the lead.

Loyola opened the second set on a 4-0 run and led 14-9 when Irwin had two kills and a block in a 4-0 run that pulled the Bears within a point. MSU again closed to one at 15-14 on a Cheffey kill, but the Ramblers responded with a 6-1 run to push the lead to 21-15. The teams sided out to set point, and Loyola held serve for the win.

Missouri State fell behind 7-0 in the third set and never recovered. The Bears pulled within two points at 10-8 on a Dake kill, and 16-14 on a block by her and Cheffey, but were unable to get closer despite recording four of their seven blocks in the third period.

The Bears return home Friday for a 7 p.m. contest with Southern Illinois (4-11, 0-2).
