SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State's 34-match Missouri Valley Conference winning streak came to an end Friday afternoon with a league-opening loss to Illinois State at Hammons Student Center.

The Redbirds (9-4, 1-0) won by set scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-18, ending additional MSU (7-7, 0-1) streaks of 16 straight MVC home wins and 13 consecutive overall home victories.

Missouri State hit .142 as a team in its first league setback in 725 days, while ISU attacked at a .355 efficiency while piling up 49 kills.

The Redbirds led 15-8 in the first set before their only attack error of the period, and MSU freshman Amelia Flynn had kills to cut the deficit to three points on three occasions, including 23-20. ISU scored the final two points and hit .350 in the frame.

Missouri State trailed early in the second set before using a 4-0 run to pull even at 15-all. The Bears tied the Redbirds three more times but never broke through, and ISU closed on a 7-0 run while amassing 20 kills in the period.

The Bears ran out to a 7-1 lead in the third set on an Aubrey Cheffey block, but the Redbirds quickly regained the lead with a rally to 12-10. MSU briefly led at 15-14 on a block by Cheffey and Makina Wratten, but the Redbirds responded with a 4-0 run and led by multiple points to the end of the match.

Cheffey and Laynie Dake shared the team kill lead with nine apiece, Emily Butters had 16 digs, and Chloe Rear handed out 30 assists. Wratten and Cheffey had three blocks each.

The Bears take on Bradley (10-2, 0-0 MVC) at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Braves open league play at Southern Illinois Friday evening.
