A pair of Missouri State standouts highlights the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete Team. MVC Elite 17 Award recipient Ashley Childers and Valley Player of the Year Verena Gimmy headline the nine-member first team as announced by the league office Wednesday (Apr. 25).
Childers received the Elite 17 honor for having a 4.0 grade-point average and finishing sixth at the conference tournament last week in Newton, Kan. She is majoring in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Gimmy, who has a 3.30 GPA in Administrative Management, is one of five first-team picks who also earned MVC All-Conference honors. Childers and Gimmy are joined on the first-team unit by Madison Glennie of Drake, Frankie Saban of Bradley, Ally Scaccia of Bradley, Kiley Walsh of Illinois State, Thilda Staubo of Indiana State, Hanna Netisingha of Southern Illinois and Alice Ho of Southern Illinois. The Scholar-Athlete Team was voted on by the league's golf sports information directors.
The criteria for the MVC scholar-athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic Academic All-America® program. Nominees must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale), while the student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions and must have participated in at least 50 percent of her team's rounds or played at the MVC Championship.
The Bears won their second-straight MVC Championship last week (April 15-17) and will compete in the NCAA Regionals, May 7-9 in Austin, Texas.
