Tennis Bears Net 5-2 MVC Victory Over UNI

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. –  The Missouri State women's tennis team is one Missouri Valley Conference win closer to collecting a share of the regular season league title after defeating Northern Iowa, 5-2, on Saturday at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
The Bears move to 8-8 on the season with the win and 3-1 in MVC action. UNI falls to 4-12 on the year and 1-4 in the league. Â
"It was a great win today with a full effort in both singles and doubles," said head coach Mallory Weber. "We have set ourselves up to have a chance with a win tomorrow to get a share of the regular season MVC crown."
The Bears came out firing in doubles action. At the No. 2 match, Phoebe Boeschen and Anelisse Torrico Moreno set the tone for MSU, collecting a dominate 6-1 win. Fati Khamissi and Alexia Meyer sealed the doubles point at the No. 3 match for MSU with a 6-2 win.
Khamissi carried the momentum over to her No. 4 singles match, collecting a 6-1, 6-2 win over UNI's Harri Proudfoot to put the Bears up 2-0. She is now 12-4 on the spring and 4-0 against MVC opponents.
After UNI tied the match at 2-2 with wins at the No. 5 and No. 3 singles matches, the Bears regained the lead when Abbey Belote defeated Savanna Hunt 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 6 match.
Torrico Moreno sealed the win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles as Alye Darter battled back for a three-set victory, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 1 singles match. Â
Missouri State returns to Cooper Tennis Complex on Sunday to face Drake at 10 a.m. and William Woods at 2 p.m. on Senior Day.
