The Missouri State men's golf team is locked in a tight battle for the top spot after the first day of the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate in Springfield, Mo. Hosting on their home course, Twin Oaks Country Club, the Bears trail defending champion Bradley by a single shot after 36 holes as the 11-team field battled cold, wet and blustery conditions for much of the day Monday (Mar. 19).
MSU shot 283-287--570 on the par 71, 6760-yard layout and trails by the slimmest of margins after BU carded 280-289--569. SIUEÂ is in third place at 577, with Western Illinois (585) and South Dakota (589) rounding out the top five. Northern Iowa (590) is sixth, followed by Loyola-Chicago (594), Green Bay (599), Creighton (600), Valparaiso (601) and Evangel (616).
The Bears have four players tied for fourth place at one-under par 141, five strokes behind leader Austin Glendinning of SIUE, who fired 65-71--136. Leading the way for MSU are juniors
Adam Fisher (72-69) and
Jack Knoesel (69-72), while senior
John Fuchs (69-72) and sophomore
Lukas McCalla (70-71) tallied the same total while playing as individuals. Next for Missouri State is junior
Kory Franks, who's tied for 11th after posting 72-72--144. Junior
Brad Carpenter shot 70-75--145 and is tied for 17th, while senior
Brian Rogers had 73-74--147 and is tied for 25th.
Tuesday's final round is scheduled to begin with 8 a.m. tee times off both no. 1 and no. 10, although early-morning frost is a possibility according to the local forecast.
