October 05, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Behind a career-high 18 kills from senior Cambree Villarreal and 16 kills on .371 hitting from Aubrey Cheffey, the Missouri State volleyball team bounced back from a first-set loss for a 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20) victory at Indiana State Friday evening.
The Bears (9-9, 2-3 Missouri Valley Conference) amassed 67 kills in the match, with freshman Amelia Flynn joining Villarreal and Cheffey in double figures with 13 kills to go with a career-high 17 digs. Fellow rookie Chloe Rear dished out a career-high 54 assists and had 11 digs for a double-double of her own.
Missouri State got three kills from Cheffey and two more from Flynn for a 5-0 run to lead 18-13 in the first set, only to see the advantage slip away with a big ISU comeback. The Sycamores (7-11, 0-6) grabbed their first lead since the early going at 21-20, then used a 3-0 run for set point at 24-21. MSU fended off three ISU conversion tries for a 24-all tie, but the home team countered with a kill and a block for the two-point win.
MSU held an 8-4 lead in the second set after MacKenzie Irwin's fifth block of the contest, but the Sycamores rallied for a 12-12 tie. The Bears were back up by four at 17-13 on yet another Irwin stuff, and made it 22-17 with Villarreal's seventh kill of the period. Flynn kills accounted for MSU's final three points, twice answering the Sycamores pulling within one score.
The Bears quickly overcame a 5-0 deficit in the third set, leading 9-8 on a Cheffey kill before Rear had a block and two kills in a 4-0 run for a 15-12 advantage. Back-to-back Flynn kills made it 18-14, and MSU led by multiple points after that, piling up 20 kills in the set.
Missouri State took the fourth-set lead for good when Laynie Dake's kill made it 10-9, and Cheffey later scored on back-to-back swings for an 18-13 advantage. ISU closed to 18-17 with a 4-0 run, but the Bears answered with consecutive points and pulled away for their 18th consecutive October victory.
MSU hit .203 in the match compared to .182 for the Sycamores, and led 67-46 in kills and 85-78 in digs. Emily Butters and had 15 digs and Gerri Idos added 14. Each team recorded nine blocks.
The Bears stay in Indiana for a match at Evansville on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Purple Aces (7-12, 1-5) swept Southern Illinois on Friday.
