Rachel Johnson and freshman
Abby Cavaiani both fired under-par rounds to lead the Missouri State women's golf team to its best score in nearly three years in Monday's (Oct. 1) first round of the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo. Johnson carded a two-under 70 and is tied for fourth place, while Cavaiani tallied a 71 and is tied for 11th. The Bears posted a 291 team total, the fourth-best in school history, to settle in fifth place in the 13-team field after 18 holes.
Freshmen
Allison Bray and
Faith Belmear shot 74 and 76, respectively, to aid the MSU effort, while sophomore
Niamh Lendrum shot 80 and junior
Sophia Sadaro shot 86 while playing as an individual.
Host Missouri leads in the early going after shooting 282, while the next five teams, including the Bears, are separated by just five strokes. Florida Gulf Coast is at 286, followed by FIU (287), Mercer (290), MSU and Fresno State (292). Illinois State is seventh with 297, while Wichita State (298) is eighth, and Arkansas State (300) ninth. Northern Illinois, Little Rock and UMKC are tied for 10th at 306, and Bradley shot 307.
The Bears are scheduled to tee off beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday for the second round at the Club at Old Hawthorne. The tournament concludes on Wednesday.
