SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Missouri State men's swimming and diving team, led by
Artur Osvath and
Christopher Heye, brought in seven top-10 finishes on day one of the Shamrock Invitational at Rolfs Aquatic Center, Friday evening.
Host Notre Dame leads the pack with 659.5 points and is closely followed by Ohio State with 643.5 points. Iowa and Wisconsin are in a tie for third-place (430.5), while Missouri State sits fifth (271).
After earning multiple accolades this week, Osvath garnered the highest individual finish for the Bears. Boasting the fastest time in the 100 breast, the junior claimed the event in 53.21 seconds and set a new personal record.
Right behind Osvath in the breaststroke event was newcomer
Blair Bish, who posted a 55.47 second swim that good enough for fourth place. Three other Bears –
Nicholas Theunissen,
Samuel Senn and
Phillip Willett – finished in the top 20.
Heye was the other Bear to bring in a top-three finish. Along with a 10
th-place showing in the 200 IM, the senior grabbed a third-place finish in the 400 IM where he completed the event in 3:56.45. Following Heye was
Bryce Blattner and
Minki Kang, who finished 10
th and 12
th, respectively.
Junior
Phillip Willett earned a top-10 seat in the 100 fly as he led the Bears with a sixth-place finish in 48.90 seconds.
Jacob Schultz followed Willett, rounding out the Bears' top-20 efforts with an 18
th-place finish in 50.67 seconds.
Missouri State's distance swimmers,
Antonio Thomas and Kang, each finished in the top 15. Thomas topped out at No. 8 in the pack and Kang followed behind in 13th place. The Bears, led by Schultz, finished one after the other in the 100 backstroke. Schultz paced MSU with a 14
th-place finish while fellow-sophomores
Conner Ripp and
Thomas Heye finished 15
th and 16
th respectively.
The Bears kicked off the second session with a strong group effort in the 200 medley relay. Schultz, Bish, Osvath and Senn brought in Missouri State's highest relay finish of the day, finishing second overall with a time of 1:27.90 in the event.
The squad's 400 medley relay – made up of Ripp, Bish, Osvath and
Lucas Paloschi – took third overall while the 200 free relay finished fourth.
