JOPLIN -- Missouri State senior
Jessica Allen ran a career best five-kilometer time of 17:06.7 to finish second place overall at the Southern Stampede. Allen led a pack of 15 Bears competing Saturday, which featured 279 runners from 33 Division I and Division 2 programs.
Allen's time marks a new personal best by almost a minute and sits as the second fastest 5K in school history.
MSU was one of four Division I programs in the race including Arkansas, Tulsa and Wichita State. As a team the Bears finished in eighth place with a team score of 223 points.
Grace Breiten marked a 38th place finish after running a 18:16.61 race, while
Jordyn Capra ran a personal best 18:39.97 and crossed the finish line in 61st place.
Finishing in the top 70 for the Bears are
Paityn Howat and
Erica Wollmering. Howat finished in 65
th place with a time of 18:45.49 and Wollmering finished in 66
th place with a career best 18:45.64 5K time.
The Bears will have two weeks to prepare for their next race when they return to the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark. on Sept. 30.
