Brad Carpenter has been named Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golfer of the Week after winning the season opener Tuesday (Sept. 12) in Hattiesburg, Miss. He birdied four holes on the back nine, including no. 18 Tuesday, to post his second straight 69 and earn medalist honors by a single stroke at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate.
In three trips around the par 71, 6902-yard Hattiesburg Country Club, Carpenter fired 73-69-69--211, two under par, to edge a pair of golfers by a shot and lead the Bears to a fifth-place finish in the 12-team field.
This marks the first career conference weekly honor for Carpenter, who finished 12th at last spring's MVC Championship and was the recipient of the league's prestigious Elite 18 Award signifying the tournament's top player in the classroom.
