SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Senior Brooke Zimmerman recorded her first goal of the season as the Missouri State women's soccer team (4-5-0) posted a 2-0 shutout against Oral Roberts, Tuesday evening at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium.
"I'm really happy with how the team performed tonight," head coach Rob Brewer said. "It's very encouraging to see the progress we've made, offensively and defensively, over the last few weeks. We got the job done tonight and now we have to focus on preparing for the next match ahead of us."
Missouri State jumped on the board early in the fourth minute when sophomore Kayleigh Putnam was able to dribble the ball through her defender. Putnam crossed the ball up the field to freshman Jordan Eickelman who then sliced a pass into the box. Zimmerman came dashing through, able to get a straight shot off and found the back of the net to put the Bears up, 1-0.
The Golden Eagles sought to even the score in the eighth minute, registering back-to-back shots that resulted in one block and a save for freshman goalkeeper Kaitlin Maxwell. Missouri State regained control of the ball and created another scoring opportunity in the 27th minute as senior Rachel Catrell drew a foul just inside the box.
Senior Mary Disidore lined up for the penalty kick and was stopped by the Oral Roberts goalkeeper, but an anxious Golden Eagle breached the box line before Disidore shot the ball, resulting in a re-kick. This time, Catrell would take the ball out and laced a scorcher past the keeper for her third goal of the season. Catrell capped of scoring for the night, helping to secure the 2-0 shutout.
Facing just two shots on goal, Maxwell picked up her third shutout of the season and improves to 4-5-0 overall. The Missouri State back line was credited with a defensive save in the opening two minutes, preventing a misplayed ball from entering the Bears' goal.
