MSU Commencement Central
SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State University's summer commencement Friday (Aug. 4) will include 16 current and former Bear student-athletes participating in ceremonies at 10 a.m., at JQH Arena on the Springfield campus.
Football has three graduates in this year's summer ceremony, while baseball, men's soccer, softball, women's soccer and track have two apiece. The sports of men's and women's golf, men's and women's basketball, and field hockey will also be represented.
Cross country and track distance specialist Savannah Beaver Aleckson is completing her degree with magna cum laude honors, while three student-athletes -- Olivia Roark (softball), Ugo Galtier (soccer) and Colleen McCurry (track and field) will earn cum laude distinction. McCurry will also be recognized as one of just three summer graduates completing the more rigorous Honors College curriculum.
Three student-athletes are earning master's degrees, including former football standout Cory Harbor who is completing his second post-graduate degree. Golfer Brik Brauburger and men's soccer player Brandon Besong are also completing MBA degrees.
A total of 289 bachelor's degrees, 236 master's degrees and 15 doctorate degrees will be conferred Friday. Scholastic honors will be given to four students who will graduate summa cum laude (with grade point averages of 3.9-4.0 on a 4.0 scale), five – including Aleckson -- who will graduate magna cum laude (with GPAs of 3.75-3.89) and 23 who will graduate cum laude (with GPAs of 3.5-3.74).
Springfield Mayor Ken McClure will be the featured speaker for the ceremony, which will be streamed live. Earlier this year, Missouri State announced it will no longer conduct summer commencement as a future cost-savings measure.
