Bears Position Preview: Safeties
Letterwinners returning/lost: 4/1; Starters returning/lost: 2/0
  • Four Missouri State safeties finished among the Bears' top nine tacklers in 2016.
  • Under the direction of assistant coach Kenji Jackson, the MSU safeties helped the Bears' secondary finish seventh overall in the MVFC in pass defense efficiency with a season mark of 139.3 -- up from 173.7 the previous year.
  • The Bears return four letterwinners and three different players -- Jared Beshore, Kam Carter and Cameron Price -- who made at least five starts in the MSU secondary, combining for a total of 119 tackles on the year.
  • Beshore enters the 2017 season as the Bears' active leader in career tackles (112) after ranking fourth on the squad with 42 stops last fall; he made eight starts at strong safety in 2016, while earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.
  • Price matched Beshore with 42 stops in his rookie campaign, including 29 solo tackles, while recording a pair of interceptions and breaking up five passes -- both team highs; his 0.64 pass break-ups per game was 18th in the MVFC, but second among Valley freshman defensive backs.
  • Carter drew five starting assignments as a redshirt freshman last year, chipping in with 35 tackles.
  • The Bears' lone additional returner at safety, Austin Henderson, saw action in nine games as a freshman last year, making 16 stops (12 solo) and forcing a fumble.
  • A pair of newcomers will also push for playing time, including redshirt freshman Alex Coffin and sophomore transfer Devlyn Hogue.
