Academic Standouts Honored at Maroon and White Banquet

SPRINGFIELD -- A total of 197 Missouri State University student-athletes were recognized during the seventh annual Maroon and White Honors Banquet and Scholar-Athlete Awards ceremony held Monday (April 24) evening at Hammons Student Center.
 
The student-athletes were recognized for achieving a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade-point average for all semesters at Missouri State.

This year's crop of academic honorees represents student-athletes currently participating in all 17 of Missouri State's intercollegiate programs.

The annual Scholar Athlete of the Year Award was presented to the graduating student-athletes holding the highest cumulative grade point averages. The recipients of this year's awards were: male recipient Brandon Weissman, a swimmer majoring in Accounting with a 4.00 grade point average; and co-female recipients in women's soccer standout Laura Ketzer, a 4.00 GPA in Astronomy and Astrophysics; and swimmer Shawna Elsey with a 4.00 GPA and double-majoring in Marketing Research and Logistics & Supply Chain Management. All three recipients will be participate in May commencement on the Springfield campus.

The ceremony also included recognition by the student-athletes of their faculty mentors in attendance for their hard work and dedication to Missouri State's student-athletes. Additional remarks and congratulations were offered by Gloria Galanes, Dean of Missouri State University's College of Arts and Letters.

Significant individual academic achievers were also highlighted, including MVC Elite 18 Award recipients Alex Jefferson (baseball) and Brianne Dixon (volleyball). Missouri Valley Conference President's Council Academic Excellence Awards were also bestowed on six MSU performers, Jefferson, Shelby Harris (football), Phil Woods (men's soccer), Ketzer, Elsey, and Savannah Aleckson (cross country/track).

Likewise, the Mid-American Conference recognized two MSU student-athletes with MAC Presidential Awards for graduating seniors with a 3.50 cumulative GPA or higher with Weissman and field hockey standout Megan Drew.
 
Seventeen student-athletes were recognized as Dr. Bruce Johnson Scholars -- those individuals who have been recognized at the Maroon and White Banquet all four years: Savannah Aleckson, Miguel Davila, Megan Drew, Shawna Elsey, Josh Finch, Shelby Harris, Alex Jefferson, Uvis Kalnins, Laura Ketzer, Tyler McCullough, Onye Osemenam, Lauren Pavel, Alexis Skiniotes, Bethany Sullinger, Brandon Weissman, Phil Woods, Carly Wright.

The final honor of the night, The Highest Team GPA Awards, were presented to the Missouri State men's swimming and diving team (3.45 GPA) and softball (3.63 GPA) programs.
