ST. LOUIS – Missouri State sophomore transfers
Angelo Garbutt and
Peyton Huslig have been named to the 2017 Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team, chosen by the league's coaches, sports information directors and a select media panel.
Garbutt, an Iowa transfer who received Honorable Mention All-MVFC recognition at linebacker on Monday, ranked sixth overall in the MVFC with a team-leading 85 tackles. The Carrollton, Texas native recorded 2.0 sacks, 6.5 TFLs and a club-best five QB hurries. He also turned in three consecutive double-digit tackle performances (Oct. 28-Nov. 11), including a Bears season high 17 stops vs. UNI to earn MVFC Newcomer of the Week honors.
Huslig drew all 11 starting assignments as the Bears quarterback in his first year with the program, passing for 1,981 yards and nine touchdowns, while amassing 2,602 yards of total offense to rank fifth in the MVFC. An Andover, Kan., product, he logged MSU all-time top 10 season figures for total offense and passing yards en route to garnering Honorable Mention All-MVFC laurels. He was named Valley Newcomer of the Week on two occasions and turned in three 100-yard rushing games to finish as the Bears' leading ground-gainer for the year. Additionally, his 174-yard day vs. Indiana State set a school record for rushing yards by a quarterback.
The two honors for the Bears continue a long line of MSU newcomers earning all-conference recognition from the Valley. Since the league began recognizing an All-Newcomer Team in 1994, only Western Illinois (83) and Illinois State (82) have had more selections than Missouri State, which has placed 79 players on MVFC All-Newcomer teams.Â
The MVFC will conclude its postseason honors with the release of its All-Academic Team on Wednesday (Nov. 29).
