Bears Sign Six Swimmers for 2018-19 Season

SPRINGFIELD – Head coach Dave Collins announced the signing of six National Letters of Intent from four swimmers and two divers during the early signing period on Friday, Nov. 17. The signing class is made up of four women and two men who will join the Bears for the 2018-19 season.
 
Adriana Avila, 5-3, Diving, Cedarburg, Wis., Cedarburg HS
A record-breaking diver at Cedarburg High School, Avila has broken records for both 6 and 11 dives on the 1-meter board. As a senior, she finished first at all of the team's dual meets and was the North Shore Conference and Cedarburg Sectional winner. She was seeded first going into the state meet. She finished seventh at the state meet, picking up all-state honorable mention laurels and helped the team to a fourth-place overall finish at the state meet. She earned All-State honorable mention status as a sophomore and finished second at conference and third at sectionals. She capped off her season with a seventh-place finish at the state meet. As a freshman, she took third and conference and fifth at sectionals and helped her team to a second-place finish at the state meet.

"From the first time Adriana came to campus, we felt she would be a perfect fit for our program. Her diving ability partnered with her enthusiasm to be a valuable member of the team was exactly what we were looking for."
 
Maddie Prettyman, 5-9, Back/Fly, Louisburg, Kan., Louisburg HS
Prettyman is a four-year letterwinner at Louisburg High School. In her senior season, she has finished second in the 100 back at the Jim Devine meet. As a junior, she comped at Junior Nationals and placed first in the Saint Louis Senior Challenge meet. She was named the most swimmer as a sophomore and was summer league high point as a sophomore and a freshman.
 
COACHING STAFF ON PRETTYMAN
"We are very excited to have Maddie join us and add depth to our butterfly and backstroke events. We have a history of success in these events at the MVC Championship and Maddie will help us continue to build upon that tradition." 
 
Sydney Radloff, 5-7, IM/Breast, Chatham, Ill., Glenwood HS
A four-year letterwinner at Glenwood High School, she currently holds the team records in the 100 breast (1:04.64) and in the 200 breast (2:20.18). She qualified for Winter Junior Nationals in the 400 IM in her senior season. As a junior, she was the SC Y State Champion in the 100 back, 100 breast and 200 breast and was a finalist in the 200 breast, 200 IM and 400 IM at the SC Y National meet. She was a LC Y State Champion in the 200 back, 100 breast and 200 breast as well. At the Futures meet, she was a finalist in the 00 breast, 200 IM and 400 IM. In her sophomore season she was the state champion in the 200 breast and was a national finalist in the 200 breast and 400 IM. As a freshman, she was a SC Y National qualifier and was the State champion in the 100 breast, 200 IM, 200 breast and 400 IM.
 
COACHING STAFF ON RADLOFF
"Sydney is the type of well-rounded athlete that we have had a lot of success with. Her versatility will be extremely valuable to our team when she arrives next fall."
 
Alex Thorson, 5-10, Free, West Des Moines, Iowa, Wuakee HS
Thorson is a four-year letterwinner at Waukee High School, where she competed different freestyle events. An All-State first-teamer her senior season, she was named the regional swimmer of the year and is the 100 and 200 freestyle record holder. She led her team to a sixth-place finish at the state meet and stood fourth on the podium in the 400 free relay. As a junior, she was a NCSA qualifier and earned an All-State honorable mention nod. She led her team to a fourth-place finish at the state high school meet as a sophomore and set the team record in the 400 free relay. A sectional qualifier as a freshman, she earned an All-American consideration in the 200 free relay.
 
COACHING STAFF ON THORSON
"Alex is coming off of big performances at the Iowa State meet. We are very excited about her potential and feel she can come right in and make a major impact in the middle distance freestyle events."
 
John David Spence, 5-10, Diving, Keller, Texas, Keller HS
A four-year letterwinner at Keller High School, Spence is a three-time district champion. He has been named the Keller High School Male Diver of the Year for three consecutive seasons and as also named the Rookie Diver of the Year for KHS as well. As a junior, he finished seventh at the Texas State 6A Meet and was named an All-American on the diving board. Spence is a team captain for his season and finished first at the Keller invitational so far this year.
 
COACHING STAFF ON SPENCE
"We feel we are adding a great diver in John David. His talent and skills on the boards will transition very nicely to college competition and give us a very balanced group of divers."
 
Alexander Stamatin, 6-1, Breast/IM, Norman, Okla., Norman North HS
A standout at Norman North High School, Stamatin has helped his high school squad to impressive finishes in his four years. In his senior season, he placed fifth at the Futures Championship in the 100 breast. In his junior season he finished fourth in the 100 and 200 breast at sectionals, won the 200 IM at the state meet, finished second at state in the 100 breast and was the top scorer at the Oklahoma State Meet. An all-district athlete, he led his team to a regional and conference championship, as well as a runner-up finish at the state meet. He won the C-final in the 200 breast at Junior Nationals. As a sophomore he was an all-city athlete and helped the team to a conference championship. In his first year on the team, he assisted the Timberwolves to a state championship title.
 
COACHING STAFF ON STAMATIN
"We are excited to have Alexander join our strong group of male breaststrokers. We believe that he will allow us to continue our breaststroke depth success at the MAC Championship."
