First-Round Results

Fresh off winning her last tournament, Missouri State standout Verena Gimmy holds a share of the first-round lead after the first day of the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo. Gimmy fired a career-best four-under-par 68 Monday (Oct. 2), holing a five-foot eagle putt on her first hole on her way to a 32 on the front nine and followed that with an even-par 36 on her back nine at Old Hawthorne Golf Club.

The senior from Munich, Germany shares the lead with Emma Allen and Marit Harryvan of Missouri with 36 holes remaining, all of which will be played Tuesday in a revised schedule for the tournament. Originally slated for 18 holes each day, Monday thru Wednesday, an ominous weather forecast caused tournament officials to plan for the 36-hole finish Tuesday.

The Bears are tied for ninth in a tightly-bunched field that shows just nine strokes separating the second thru 11th-place teams. They shot 302 in the opening round and are tied with Missouri Valley Conference rival Illinois State. Host Missouri shot an even-par 288 to take the lead, while Middle Tennessee is second at 294, a stroke better that North Texas and East Tennessee State. Kennesaw State is fifth at 296, followed by Bradley (297), Florida International (298), Florida Gulf Coast (300), with the Bears and ISU rounding out the top 10.

Individually for the Bears, senior Stine Pettersen carded a 76, with junior Rachel Johnson one behind at 77. Junior Ashley Childers and sophomore Sophia Sadaro each posted 81.

Tuesday's play is scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
