The Missouri State women's golf team is tied for fifth after the first day of the Missouri Valley Conference Preview in Newton, Kan. The Bears shot 312-303--615 Monday (Oct. 16) at Sand Creek Station Golf Club to settle in the middle of the pack in the 11-team tournament that features all 10 MVC schools and former member Wichita State.
Junior
Rachel Johnson and senior
Verena Gimmy led the way for the defending Valley champs as they sit in third and ninth place, respectively, entering Tuesday's final round. Both shot two-under-par 70 in Monday's afternoon round. Johnson opened with 77 in the morning to give her a 147 total, which has her four shots off the lead. Gimmy posted 80 in the first round to give her a 150 total.
Freshman
Niamh Lendrum carded 74-81--155 in her first collegiate tournament and is tied for 20th in the 69-player field. Junior
Ashley Childers is tied for 40th after shooting 79-82--161, while sophomore
Ryan Pate shot 90-81--171. Senior
Stine Pettersen carded 76 in the opening round before being forced to withdraw due to injury.
Wichita State used a strong second round to open up a nine-shot lead on the field. The Shockers went 304-294--598 compared to Indiana State's 306-301--607. Northern Iowa is third at 609, with Southern Illinois another shot back at 610. The Bears are tied with Bradley for fifth, followed by Illinois State and Loyola with 624, Drake at 635, Valparaiso at 649 and Evansville at 673.
Tuesday's final round is slated for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
