MSU Jazz Finals Video
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Missouri State Sugar Bears captured an eighth-place finish in the Division I Jazz competition here on Jan. 15 to wrap a solid weekend performance at the annual UDA National College Competition at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort.
The Sugar Bears also finished 10th in the Division I Pom competition in their first-ever appearance in that event.
MSU's top-eight finish in Jazz was its third in four years and a substantial boost for the proud program, directed by coach
Susan Brown. Cal State Fullerton claimed its second straight Jazz national title with Hofstra, Northern Arizona, Delaware and Southeastern Louisiana rounding out the top five.
There were 17 national semifinalists and nine finalists in the Jazz competition.
The Sugar Bears did not advance to the finals of the Division I Pom event, but their score was good enough to finish in 10th place among the 15 national semifinalists.
Hofstra won its third straight Pom national championship, edging out Cal State Fullerton, St. Joseph's, North Dakota State and Long Beach State in the top five.
Video footage of the competition can be seen on www.varsity.com again this year. The top teams from nationals will be featured in the nationally-televised event highlight show which will air on ESPN later this spring.
The prestigious competition, which showcases the country's best college cheerleaders, dance team performers and mascots, is in its 33rd year.
The Missouri State cheer team did not compete at this year's UCA national competition.
