Volleyball Bears Down UNI in Cedar Falls, 3-2

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Missouri State volleyball team earned its fourth victory of the season against a 2015 NCAA Tournament team Friday with a thrilling 3-2 (26-24, 25-21, 20-25, 19-25, 15-13) triumph over UNI at the McLeod Center.
MSU's first road victory over the Panthers (10-7, 1-3 Missouri Valley Conference) since 1990 moved the Bears to 10-7 overall and 1-2 in league play after their fifth consecutive match and 10th overall this season against a team that played in the postseason in 2015.
Lily Johnson led the way with a season-high 25 kills, and senior Simone House added 11 while five Bears logged at least 10 digs. MSU held a 67-66 lead in total kills, while UNI edged the Bears in hitting percentage (.207-.195), digs (86-79) and blocks (10-8).
The Bears used a 4-0 run to take a 6-4 lead in the fifth set, and led 10-7 on a House kill before the Panthers came back to tie the score twice. Lynsey Wright and Ashley Ophoven stuffed a Panther attack for an MSU match point at 14-13, and Wright put away the final kill for the Missouri State win.
The first set was tied 15 times, and the Bears overcame a 23-22 deficit thanks to a pair of kills from House before a Johnson block secured the two-point win. MSU bolted to a 12-5 lead in the second and led by at least three points for the remainder of the period thanks to 18 kills and a .286 hitting percentage.
Both the third and fourth sets were tied 10-10 when UNI pulled way in each. The Panthers used a pair of 5-0 runs in the third to gain a 23-18 advantage, and then rattled off a 13-5 spurt in the fourth set to lead 23-18, piling up 34 kills compared to 22 for the Bears in the two sets.
Freshman Daniele Messa finished with 50 assists and 19 digs, Wright led the team with four blocks, and senior Tatum Marshall served two aces, including one for a 9-7 lead in the fifth set.
MSU visits Drake (10-7, 1-2) on Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest.
