Bears Unable to Overcome Panthers in Conference Opener
September 23, 2016 | Women's Soccer
WATERLOO, Iowa – The Missouri State women's soccer team (3-5-2, 0-1 MVC) fell in the Bears' 2016 Missouri Valley Conference opener, 1-0, to UNI (6-4-1, 1-0 MVC) on Friday (Sept. 23).
The Panthers forced MSU's goalkeeper, Evan Stamp, to go to work early when UNI's Sydney Hayden fired the first shot of the game for either team in the first minute of the match. Six minutes later, Hayden had another opportunity but could not get the ball past Stamp.
The Bears wouldn't find an open look at the net until the 22nd minute of the match, but UNI's defense got in the way of Brooke Prondzinski's shot, blocking it from coming in contact with the keeper. Mary Disidore would be the only other Bear to take a shot in the first half, as she sent the ball high and the Panthers held the 7-2 shot advantage going into halftime.
UNI continued to push the ball in the second half, as Hayden snuck the ball through MSU's defense and past Stamp to put the Panthers on the board in the 46th minute.
Momentum changed in favor of the Bears in the 68th minute, when MSU's Brooke Zimmerman took her 10th shot of the season, forcing UNI's goalkeeper to make her first save of the match. In the next minute, two Bears would push the ball at UNI's defense in an attempt to put Missouri State on the board, but the Panther keeper made the save on each attempt to prevent MSU from scoring.
Freshman Ashley Coonfield took the last shot of the match for the Bears, but sent the ball just wide of the goal. UNI tried to add to their lead in the 89th minute, but Stamp captured her sixth save of the game.
Missouri State will travel to Western Illinois for the final non-conference road match of the 2016 slate on Sunday (Sept. 25). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at John Mackenzie Alumni Field in Macomb, Ill.
