ATLANTA - Another lifetime mark was shattered at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships as Artur Osvath of Missouri State earned the top time in his heat of the 100-yard breaststroke preliminaries on Friday, March 25, at the McAuley Aquatics Center on the campus of Georgia Tech.
After trailing the first 50 yards in heat 1 of the 100 breast prelims, Osvath rallied to touch the wall first among three competitors in a personal-best time of 53.75 seconds. Seeded 41st heading into the event, Osvath eventually placed 34th overall.
"I'm very pleased with Artur's 100 breast race today," Missouri State head coach Dave Collins said. "Much like yesterday, to go a best time is huge moving into his best event tomorrow."
Osvath's 100 breast mark was an improvement by .68 seconds from the top time of his career. Friday's finish also moved the freshman swimmer from fifth to second on the Missouri State all-time top five list in the event. Osvath missed breaking the 100 breast record by just .19 seconds, which is held by Cajun Skinner who set it at 53.57 during the 2008-2009 season.
The NCAA Championships continue at the McAuley Aquatics Center at 9 a.m. CST Saturday, March 26. Osvath will participate in the 200 breaststroke, which he is seeded 27th going into the event.
