IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Missouri State junior Jessica Allen ran a personal-best time of 21:32.0 Friday morning to lead the Bears' efforts at the NCAA Midwest Regional here.
Â
Allen's performance placed her 66th in the field of 235 runners on the six-kilometer course at the Ashton Cross Country Course. Her 17:56.5 pace at the five-kilometer mark was also a personal best at that distance, helping her push to the front of MSU's pack for the sixth time in six races this season.
Â
"I thought Jessi ran a very strong race," said MSU head coach Jordan Fife. "She put herself up with the main group early and came through 5k well under her personal best. She was still able to finish strong, and I think she learned a lot today about what she's capable of."
Â
As a team, the Bears finished with 828 points to place 30th in the 33-team field. Missouri (83) won the team championship to edge Oklahoma State (89), Iowa State (90) and Minnesota (131) at the top of the pack. Northern Iowa finished tenth as the top Missouri Valley Conference program at the meet, while Wichita State was 12th and Bradley was 15th.
Â
"I think if we would have run to our potential, we would have finished several spots higher," Fife said. "We didn't get our best race from the full team today. We get nearly our entire varsity squad back next year and can add freshman Grace Breiten who redshirted this year. So we are very excited about our future."
Â
Savannah Aleckson finished with a mark of 22:52.6 to finish in 176th place, while sophomore Jade Raynor set a personal best of 23:25.6 to finish 204th. Sophomore Renae Buschling was close behind at 23:32.1 (207th), while Jordyn Capra (209th) led MSU's newcomers with a time of 23:35.3. Sophomore Mercedes Robinson (24:40.8) and freshman Danielle Bohannon (25:05.5) also competed for the Bears at the highly-competitive national qualifier.
Â
Missouri junior Karissa Schweizer (19:54.4) was the overall individual winner, while Wichita State's Rebekah Topham, the MVC champion, was the best performer from The Valley with a 15th-place showing.
