Field Hockey Edged By Ball State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Unable to overcome a Cardinal goal late in the first half, the Missouri State field hockey team (2-10, 1-4 MAC) fell 1-0 to Ball State (3-9, 2-2 MAC) Friday afternoon.

Bianca Mills registered the first shot of the match in the ninth minute, leading to three consecutive penalty corners. Upon entry, Liz Young took two separate shots but was unable to place one in the cage. Freshman Marina Ellison took her first shot of the game on the third penalty corner play, but was blocked on the far right side.

In the 16th minute, Lexi Kavanaugh of Ball State stole the ball away from MSU and dribbled the ball down the field to take on MSU's starting goalkeeper, Megan Drew, one-on-one. With just Drew between her and the goal, Kavanaugh fired a shot that sailed wide left keeping the score tied at zero.

The Bears held the Cardinals scoreless until the 25th minute when Hannah Bohn of Ball State scored off a rebounded shot to give the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Five minutes into the second half, Feli Heinzel recorded her first of two saves after the Cardinals fired a shot from the right side. Heinzel came across the goal and threw out her leg to successfully stop the ball and keep the Cardinals from extending their lead.

With five minutes to go in the match Brynne Satre entered the game as a kicking back, leaving her, Emily Tran and Paige Pashea to defend the backfield. In the 67th minute the Cardinals drove the ball down the field on a breakaway but Tran swooped in and successfully stole the ball, protecting the empty goal.

Just before time expired, the Bears earned a penalty corner and lined up for a corner play. Satre entered the ball and Young drew a second penalty corner to keep Missouri State alive. Upon entry of the second penalty corner, Young mishandled the ball and passed it to sophomore Renee Rhoads who took her third shot of the season, but was blocked to end the game.
