Bears Travel To Kansas Double Dual

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Missouri State men's and women's swimming and diving team travels to Lawrence, Kan. Oct. 21-22 for a double dual against the Kansas Jayhawks and the North Dakota Fighting Hawks. Competition on Friday begins at 5 p.m. and Saturday's action is set for 12 p.m.

Double Dual
The Missouri State women's swimming and diving team will take on both Kansas and North Dakota while the men's team will go head-to-head against North Dakota.

Bear Bites
Heading into the weekend's meet, the men's and women's team are off to a solid start to the 2016-17 season. The Bears had strong performances both at the Missouri Show-Me Showdown (Oct. 7) and the Missouri State Invitational (Oct. 8).
 
The men's team finished second behind host Missouri at the Bear's first meet of the season. Artur Osvath and Antonio Thomas each had had first-place outings, while Minki Kang, Michael Mollak and Samuel Senn each recorded second-place finishes. In his first collegiate meet, freshman diver McClay Hartsfield took second in the 1-meter with a total of 271.15 points.
 
The women's team placed fifth at the Show-Me Showdown with 265 points. Senior Anna Bump led the way for the women, finishing third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.96. The following day, the women's team returned home for the first annual Missouri State Invitational where the Bears earned a Co-Champion title.
 
The Bears kicked off the invitational breaking the pool record in the 400yd medley relay with a time of 3:43.79. Sydney Zupan was the top performer for the Bears, breaking two pool and personal records. The junior set a new personal record and broke the pool record in the 100yd butterfly in a dominating, 55.12 second outing. The Bears tied with the Houston Cougars for first with a total of 347 points.
 
A Look At The Competition
Kansas
Opening up the season, the Kansas Jayhawks won the CSCAA Open Water Nationals on Sept. 17, with a score of 3:17:20.99, defeating Rice, Cincinnati, Carson-Newman, Saint Louis, Oklahoma Baptist and Colorado School of Mines. The Jayhawks grabbed the top three spots, along with two other top-20 finishes.
 
Libby Walker and Haley Bishop posted identical times, 1:05:48.32, to tie for first place while Jenny Nusbaum finished with a time of 1:05:48.85.
 
North Dakota
The North Dakota Fighting Hawks have competed on three separate occasions this season, featuring duals against St. Cloud State and South Dakota. The men's team opened up the season with a 189-106 win over St. Cloud State while the women won 186.5-108.5
 
The following week, North Dakota won back-to-back dual meets against South Dakota. On Sat. Oct. 14, the men posted a 159.5-83.5 victory over the Coyotes and the women dominated South Dakota 179-63. Returning to the pool the next day, the women's team defeated Northern Colorado 181-59 and South Dakota 174-68 while the men defeated South Dakota 150-93.
