OMAHA, Neb. - Missouri State senior midfielder and Nebraska native Erin Stewart scored late in first half as the Bears (6-3-1) wrapped up non-conference play with a 1-0 road win at Nebraska Omaha (3-5-2) on Tuesday night. The victory is the league-best sixth of the year for MSU which closes out the busiest stretch of the season on a 4-1-1 run to enter conference play.
"It was nice for the hometown kid to get the game-winner in front of friends and family," said head coach Rob Brewer. "I thought we were pretty organized defensively and had to be as UNO had some good runners. It has been a challenging stretch and I hope it has prepared us for conference play."
Frequent offensive pressure saw the Bears strike first in the 32nd minute. Senior Cassie Le took a pass across the midfield line up the right side of play. She sent a pass forward for freshman Brooke Prondzinski, who tracked it to the end line. Her cross found a wide open Stewart in front of net for the easy tap-in goal and a 1-0 lead for MSU.
Great all-around play by the Bears held the Mavericks at bay and senior goalkeeper Jessica Perry needed to make a lone second-half save for her second-consecutive clean sheet.
Stewart led the Bears with two shots, both on goal, as MSU was out-shot, 10-6. Millie Kingsbury, Alix Opfer, Suzy Smith and Brooke Zimmerman each had one shot in the match.
MSU will host UNI on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in the MVC opener. All fans will be admitted free to the match against the Panthers and the first 500 fans receive free pizza as Missouri State will celebrate the 20th season of the program.
