MSU Drops Regular Season Finale to UNI, 7-0

WATERLOO, Iowa -- The Missouri State women's tennis team concluded its 2014-15 regular season schedule Sunday, April 19, with a 7-0 loss to Northern Iowa at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.

The Bears (4-16, 1-6 MVC) battled the Panthers (15-6, 5-2 MVC) in doubles to start and came out with a win in one of three contests.

Juniors Ema Turudija and Miranda Poile picked up MSU's lone victory with an 8-4 final at No. 1 doubles over UNI's Erica Medlin and Elvira Lopez. It was Turudija's and Poile's third win together and first against an MVC opponent.

Jieke Stroobant and Astird Santos of UNI defeated Ekaterina Donetskova and Anelisse Torrico Moreno of MSU at No. 2 doubles 8-3, while the Panthers' No. 3 duo of Gisela Kemper and Sydney Wolfe took down the Bears' Abbey Belote and Rebecca McIsaac 8-2.

UNI swept singles play to clinch a regular season finale victory.

Turudija won her first set at No. 1 singles 6-3 for MSU, but UNI's Medlin came back in the second for a 6-1 win and took a third-set match tiebreaker over Turudija, 10-6.

Donetskova, playing for the Bears at the No. 2 position, dropped her first set 6-1 but forced a tiebreaker in the second set. However, the Panthers' Elvira Lopez was able to take the match in straight sets with a tiebreaker 7-3 victory.

In the remaining four matches, UNI's Stroobant beat Torrico Moreno 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3, Santos topped Poile at the No. 4 slot 6-1, 6-2, Kemper defeated Belote at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-1 and MSU's McIsaac fell in the No. 6 match to Wolfe 6-4, 6-1.

The Bears are scheduled to travel to Evansville, Ind., next for the Missouri Valley Conference Championship beginning on Thursday, April 24. The single-elimination conference tournament quarterfinal times and matchups will be released this week.
