Jan. 30, 2015

Final Stats

DES MOINES, Iowa - Kenzie Williams scored 27 points, including Missouri State's final seven in regulation to send the game to overtime, but Drake prevailed behind 43 points from Lizzy Wendell in a 94-89 classic at the Knapp Center in Des Moines.

The Lady Bears (8-11, 5-3 Missouri Valley Conference) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end in dramatic fashion, while the Bulldogs remained in a tie for first at 13-6 overall and 8-0 in MVC play.

Drake used an 18-3 run to take control in the first half and led by as many as 14 points at 34-20 with 6:23 remaining in the period. The Lady Bears rattled off 22 points in the final 6:18 of the half to trail 49-42 at the break, and scored the first seven points of the second half to erase the entire 14-point deficit in just eight minutes thanks to a corner trey from NiJay Gaines for a 49-49 tie with 17:39 remaining.

Williams followed with two more triples from the same spot on the floor for a 55-51 advantage with 16:12 to play, and Tyonna Snow's steal and layup put the Lady Bears ahead 59-53 with exactly 15 minutes on the clock.

The Bulldogs countered with a 14-1 run to lead 67-60 with 12:08 to play, and the Lady Bears pulled within two points on seven separate occasions until Williams scored with 51 seconds remaining for the 85-85 deadlock.

Missouri State had the final shot in regulation after a Drake turnover, but Snow's free-throw line jumper hit the back iron.

The Lady Bears went just 1-for-9 from the floor in the extra period, but remained close to the Bulldogs after falling behind 92-87. Snow's third steal of the game turned into a layup for a 92-89 deficit, and she nabbed a fourth shortly thereafter to give the Lady Bears possession with 27 seconds left. MSU missed two shots on its next possession, and Drake was finally able to seal the game with a pair of free throws with 2.2 seconds left.

Gaines finished with a career-high 19 points in her hometown, while Snow added 13 and Hughes scored 10. Hillary Chvatal grabbed 11 rebounds as MSU held a 47-46 edge in that category.

Wendell, the MVC's leading scorer, matched her own scoring output from an earlier game this season as the No. 3 total in the NCAA this year. DU's Caitlin Ingle registered a triple-double with 14 points, 11 boards and 10 assists.

MSU shot 34-for-83 (.410) overall and made a season-high twelve 3-pointers in 26 attempts, including five from Williams to move her past the 100 mark in her career. Drake shot .493 (37-75), and hit 12 from long range while attempting 38, the most ever for an MSU opponent.

Missouri State visits UNI (10-9, 6-2) at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Panthers lost 70-51 to Friday Wichita State.
