SPRINGFIELD - The Missouri State men's soccer team (1-1-1) and the UMKC `Roos (0-1-1) played to a 2-2 draw in Springfield on Saturday night. The game, very untypical of Missouri State soccer, featured four first half goals between the two sides.
"It was a very much a different type of game," said head coach Jon Leamy. "It was just one of those hard fought games that we felt was going to go our way, but ended up not going our way."
The Bears opened the scoring early on a nice night on campus. In the 10th minute of play, junior Emmerich Hoegg bent a rocket from the far northwest end of the field. Stationed outside of the box, the left-footed strike curved past the positioned keeper and into the far side of the net. The crowd of 767 was ecstatic as the Bears jumped ahead.
Just a few minutes later, UMKC answered with an 18th minute goal of their own. Jordan Rideout received a long clear that sailed over the majority of the players for both teams. When he brought in the pass, Rideout was one-on-one with the MSU defender and was able to place a shot past Bears goalkeeper Liam Priestley.
Missouri State did not wait long to answer, however. Deep on `Roo territory, the Bears crossed a ball into Mikey Lightbourne stationed right at the penalty marker within the box. Lightbourne quickly controlled the cross and dropped off a pass to an open Brandon Barbero. Knowing exactly what he wanted to do with it, Barbero struck the ball with pace past the UMKC goalie to pull MSU ahead once again.
The scoring did not end there, as UMKC found an answer for a second time. Playing with the ball deep on the offensive corner, Wes White played a long ball into the box. His intentions were unclear, but the ball kept carrying and drifting towards net, eventually dipping below the crossbar. Within the first 35 minutes, the score was 2-2.
That fourth score of the half seemed to settle down both team's defenses and not another ball crossed the goal line for the remainder of the game. The game went to extra time, but neither team found the back of the net.
The Bears play the only regular season tournament on the schedule this weekend in Dallas, Texas. MSU will play two games in three days at the SMU Tournament, starting with SMU on Friday and Memphis on Sunday.
