DALLAS, Texas - The Missouri State men's soccer team (2-1-2) earns a tie with Memphis (3-1-0) in the second game of the SMU Invitational. The Bears did not allow a goal in the two match tournament and finished with an undefeated record of 1-0-1 on the weekend, identical to Memphis.
Following 1-0 victories for both sides on Friday, Sunday's noon matchup became the de facto title game for the weekend's four-team tournament. The Bears and Tigers proved to be very defensive from the start. It wasn't until the 78th minute of play when a save was recorded by either team. MSU sophomore Addison Watson earned his second consecutive shutout, and lowered his goals against average to 0.30 after playing all 200 minutes in goal this weekend.
The Bears did have a few opportunities to score, beginning with four first half corner kicks and ending with a last moment shot on goal by Jack Griffin at 109:54 in the second extra session. Missouri State totaled nine shots, with three on frame, as compared to Memphis' 12 total shots, but only one on goal.
"It was a really good start for us statistically," said head coach Jon Leamy. "Then they had a good start to the second half and it was pretty even the rest of the way until the final whistle. (We are) two pretty good organized defensive teams that don't give up a lot of goals."
The final game of the tournament featured host Southern Methodist against Stony Brook. With a 3-1 victory, SMU claimed third place in the tournament. Following the game, the all-tournament team was announced with James Fawke being named Co-MVP and Jack Wood, Andrew Turner, and Brandon Barbero being named to the all-tournament team. The complete list is below.
The Bears continue the season-long four game road swing on Friday, Sept. 19, in Conway, Ark. The game against University of Central Arkansas is the first Missouri Valley Conference matchup for both teams.
