Dallas, Texas - The Missouri State men's soccer team (2-1-1) blanked the Southern Methodist University Mustangs (1-3-0) in the nightcap of Friday's SMU Invitational. The 1-0 victory is the first shutout and victory of Addison Watson's MSU career.
Missouri State went ahead midway through the first half when senior Jack Wood received a pass from fellow senior Andrew Turner. Noticing the Mustang goalkeeper had left his line and was approaching Wood at the top of the box, the Gloucestershire, England native chipped the ball over the oncoming goalie. The 21st minute goal was Wood's first of the season and fourth of his career. Turner's assist was the third of his career.
Watson, a redshirt sophomore, earned his first win of the season to even his personal record to 1-1. Watson made one save on the night, and lowered his goals against average to 0.47. The Mustangs were able to outshoot the Bears, 9-4, becoming the first team this season to do so this season. SMU had their most dangerous look of the game in the 80th minute when they received a corner kick. The left footed kicker curled the ball into the box, and connected with a fellow Pony's head before the ball sailed just over Watson's crossbar. Outside of that late opportunity, the defense and goalkeeper combination were able to keep SMU's chances down and away from net.
In the first game of the SMU Invitational, between Memphis and Stony Brook, the Tigers pulled away late with an 89th minute goal to win, 1-0. The Bears are set to face Memphis on Sunday in each team's final tournament game. Stats for that game can be found on the link above.
