The Missouri State volleyball team begins the 2014 season out west this week with three matches at the Utah Classic in Salt Lake City. The Bears, who are coming off their 14th 20-win season in the last 15 years, open the campaign at 5:30 p.m. Friday against two-time defending Western Athletic Conference champion New Mexico State.

Missouri State takes on the host Utah Utes at 11 a.m. Saturday and concludes tournament play at 6 p.m. that evening against Montana State.
The Bears open the home season Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. against Oral Roberts in the University Plaza/Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational. It will be an exciting weekend for MSU Athletics as the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Academic Achievement Center Dedication and Legacy Celebration will take place on Sept. 5, and a jersey retirement ceremony for long-time MSU coach Linda Dollar will be held between the second and third sets of MSU's 7 p.m. match with Western Kentucky that night.

The Opponents
New Mexico State is the favorite to win a third consecutive Western Athletic Conference title this season and boasts three preseason all-WAC players on its roster. The Aggies went 22-11 last season and lost to Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Utah is picked to finish 10th in the powerful Pac-12 this season, a year after going 21-13 and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Utes return four starters and their libero from that team.
Montana State is predicted to finish 10th in the 12-team Big Sky Conference this fall. The Bobcats return four starters from last season's 6-25 club.

The Series
The Bears lead New Mexico State 8-2 in the all-time series. Missouri State has one the last five meetings, the most recent coming in 1997.
MSU and Utah have split eight meetings, most recently a 3-2 victory for the Bears in Hammons Student Center in 2010. The Utes won in Salt Lake City in 2006.

Missouri State holds a 5-2 series lead over Montana State. The teams last played in 1992.
