ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Missouri Valley Conference announced the league's top performers at the annual post-season awards banquet. Missouri State senior James Fawke and junior Emmerich Hoegg were two of the conference's top eleven named to the All-MVC First Team. Jack Roberts, Brandon Besong, and Parker Maher were named to the All-MVC Second Team. Addison Watson, Brandon Barbero, and Jack Griffin were Honorable Mention All-MVC selection with Robbie Oslica representing the Bears on the All-Freshman team. The nine Bears named to the various teams are second most in program history only to the ten representatives in 1999.
Fawke was named to his second-consecutive first team all-conference team and his third career All-MVC selection. As a captain for the league's top defense again, Fawke has been a consistent wall on the back line. The Bears posted a Valley-record 0.15 goals against average this season, only conceding one goal in conference play for the second consecutive year. This season Fawke was named MVC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15, as well as Co-MVP of the SMU Invitational.
Hoegg earns first team all-conference honors for the first time in his career. Hoegg, an Honorable Mention team-member from a season ago, led the Bears in goals (six) and points (12) for the second straight season. Hoegg has a habit for excitement as well, his four game-winners rank first in the conference and 19th in the nation. Hoegg's 10 career game-winners puts him third all-time in program history. Hoegg is the reigning MVC Offensive Player of the Week.
Roberts receives his second straight all-conference recognition with his place on the All-MVC Second Team. A first-team selection from a year ago, Roberts has emerged in conference play as a key goal scorer, scoring both of his goals on the season in MVC contests. He ranks fifth in the Valley in both goals and points this season.
Besong's Second Team All-MVC selection is the second time the conference has recognized him, after being named to the Honorable Mention team a year ago. Besong has been all over the field for this year's Bears, leading the team with minutes played and is a legitimate threat at all three positions on the field.
Maher earns his first All-MVC Second Team selection after being named to the conference's All Freshman Team in 2011 and earning All-Tournament Team honors last season. Maher leads all active Bears in career games played and is a reliable weapon in both the back and middle of the field. Maher shares the team-high with three assists on the season.
Watson makes his first All-MVC team with his Honorable Mention selection. After a redshirt season, and a season learning under All-MVC goalkeeper Trevor Spangenberg, Watson has proved he is ready to play. Watson holds a conference best 0.547 goals against average overall and an all-time best 0.15 GAA in MVC play. Watson recorded eight individual shutouts this season, including five in conference play. His shutout victory over Bradley earned Watson MVC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 27.
Barbero also receives his first league recognition. The junior doubled his points total from a season ago and scored his first collegiate goal this season in the tie with UMKC. Barbero logged over 1,200 minutes on the pitch this season and is a reliable player with the ball at his feet.
Griffin earns Honorable Mention All-Conference after being named to the All-Freshman team a season ago. A consistent midfielder for the Bears, Griffin started 15 of 16 games and tallied an assist in the conference victory over Drake. Griffin has aslo totaled over 1,200 minutes of play this season for the Bears.
Oslica has been named to the All-Freshman team after playing his first season following his redshirt year. Oslica made 12 starts on the year and played in all 16 games for Missouri State. Oslica scored the game's lone goal in a 1-0 shutout victory over Air Force, earning him MVC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 29.
The Bears will play in the semifinal match of the MVC tournament tomorrow at 3 pm against _________, the winners of Wednesday's first quarterfinal. The 2014 MVC Championships are held in Peoria, Ill., with all games scheduled to be played on Bradley's Shea Stadium and streamed live on ESPN3 and WATCH ESPN.
