SPRINGFIELD - The Missouri State men's soccer team (6-3-2) will have the opportunity to face one of the nation's best collegiate soccer teams in the University of New Mexico (8-2-1) on Sunday at 7 p.m. CST. The 12th ranked Lobos have three straight NCAA Sweet 16 appearances and were one of the last four teams standing in last year's College Cup.
The Bears, which have had the luxury of four straight home games, will make the 800-plus mile trip to Albuquerque this weekend to face the highest-ranked nonconference opponent since consecutive road trips to then No. 12 Louisville and No.2 Tulsa in September of 2010. This is the final nonconference game on both teams' schedules.
As of Thursday morning, the Bears' seven shutouts are tied for the fourth most in Division I. New Mexico is just one behind MSU in the category, with six shutouts on the season, but ranks tied for 12th in win-loss-tie percentage at 0.773.
Sunday's matchup will be the first time the two schools have played in over a decade. Missouri State and New Mexico played five times throughout 1997 and 2003, with the all-time series split 2-2-1. The atmosphere should be quite impressive, with UNM ranking in the top-15 in home attendance in every season since the NCAA tracked the statistic in 2001.
New Mexico will provide a free live stream of the game at the link above. Albuquerque, NM, is in the Mountain Time Zone, making the start scheduled for 6 p.m. local time.
