COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri State men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed and each finished third at the Missouri Show-Me Showdown Friday, Oct. 3, at the Mizzou Aquatics Center

The men finished with a combined score of 366 points, while Missouri won the Showdown with 696 and Drury followed with 429. The women completed the Showdown with 366.50 points, also ending up behind Missouri (684) and Drury (436).

"The early season meets provide us with a great opportunity to evaluate our athletes and make adjustments that will lead to success in the coming meets," head coach Dave Collins said. "We have a very busy October with lots of opportunities for improvement."

Senior Paul Le won two events for the Bears' men's side, swimming top times in the 100 back (48.89) and the 200 IM (1:48.47). Junior Miguel Davila earned a runner-up time in the 500 free, finishing the event in 4:34.80.

Other returning notables include sophomore Lauren Pavel who finished fifth in the 100 breast (1:06.78) and ninth in 200 IM (2:12.16). Junior Uvis Kalnins placed third in the 100 fly and 200 free, while Matthew Wilson placed sixth in the 100 fly in a time of 50.65.

The Bears used a heavy contingent of freshmen in their lineup and many of them highlighted MSU performances.

"It's always a fun experience to see the freshmen compete in their first college meet," Collins said. "This group did a good job managing nerves and taking feedback positively."

Men's freshman diver Brody Arvesen placed in the top-8 in both diving events, taking a team-best second in the 1-meter event with 320.80 points and seventh in 3-meter diving (220.40).

Women's divers Melissa Maynard and Hannah Swyers each had top-10 performances, with Maynard finishing third in 1-meter diving (234.05) and Swyers eighth in 3-meter diving (223.10).

Freshmen Sydney Zupan and Hanna Flanagan each had noteworthy debuts for the Bears, with Zupan placing in the top-10 in the 200 free (1:55.97) and sixth in the 100 back (59.18). Flanagan swam the 100 fly in 59.62 seconds to finish seventh.

The Bears begin their dual season when they head to Evansville to take on the Purple Aces at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, and also face Southern Illinois in a dual the following day at 11 a.m.
