
Volleyball Bears Top Shockers in Marathon Match

SPRINGFIELD -- The Missouri State volleyball team emerged victorious from its longest match of the season Friday evening, dispatching rival Wichita State in five sets by scores of 24-26, 25-20, 25-18, 22-25 and 15-10 in a contest that lasted just under two-and-a-half hours.
The Bears (11-7, 5-2 Missouri Valley Conference) claimed third place in the league standings while posting season highs for kills (72) and digs (97). The Shockers fell to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in MVC play.
Missouri State seized control of the fifth set when Lily Johnson and Lynsey Wright each had two kills during a 5-0 run that put the Bears ahead 6-3. Olivia Brand added a kill for an 8-4 lead, and the Shockers closed to 8-6 before committing five consecutive errors for a 13-6 deficit. Brand added another kill for match point at 14-9 and Andrea Beaty finished off the win with her season-high 14th kill.
In addition to Beaty's 14 kills, Johnson (21), Brand (14) and Wright (11) each reached double figures, while Johnson added 14 digs for MSU's first 20/10 match since Karen Rivatto had 20 kills and 14 digs against Evansville in 2011.
The teams were nearly identical through four sets as each side had 63 kills and 20 errors, with the Bears holding a 6-1 edge in service aces and 7-6 lead in blocking to account for the 96-89 advantage in total points entering the final set.
Missouri State finished the match with a .258 hitting percentage, piling up 72 kills against 23 errors in 190 attempts. The Shockers hit .215 (69-25-205).
Five Bears had at least 11 digs, led by 25 from Maddy Hogan and a career-high 22 from Elise Munroe. Tatum Marshall added 15 and Kinsey McCarter had 11 along with a career-high 58 assists.
Missouri State plays its final non-conference match of the year Monday at 4 p.m. at Southeast Missouri State.
